Frequently Asked Questions About Morocco Tours
At Deep South Travel, we get many questions about Morocco and keep this list updated to explain how our tours work. With a dedicated team and deep local knowledge, we create customized, bespoke experiences. Browse these FAQs to see if we’re the right fit, and feel free to email us with any questions.
What kind of tours do you organize?
At Deep South Travel, we specialize in creating private, tailor-made tours across Morocco for travelers from around the globe. Each itinerary is crafted in collaboration with you, ensuring it reflects your travel dates, interests, and personal style. Our tours are flexible and fully customizable, designed to match the experiences you want most. We carefully balance independent discovery with expert-guided visits, giving you the freedom to explore at your own pace while having the support of your dedicated driver or professional guide whenever needed.
What kind of transportation do you use on your trips?
For our private tours, we use modern Hyundai H1 minivans, offering comfortable seating for up to five adults. For larger groups of six or more, we provide spacious minibuses that accommodate 12 to 17 passengers with ease. When traveling through remote regions or rugged terrain, we operate with new Toyota Land Cruiser 4x4s, ensuring both comfort and reliability throughout your journey.
Is my driver also my guide?
At Deep South Travel, we operate differently from most tour companies in Morocco. With years of experience, we’ve found the right balance between drivers and guides to create a seamless journey. Your driver is more than a driver; he’s your host, local expert, and companion. Many hold advanced English degrees and are among the best in the country. They ensure your safety, share cultural insights, and connect you with authentic local life. In cities like Marrakech and Fez, you’ll have certified guides to explore the historic medinas, while in other regions, our local coordinators welcome you into their villages and share their traditions. This approach gives you the perfect mix of expert guidance and independent discovery.
Can I join a group tour of Morocco with you?
When we first began organizing tours in Morocco, we offered group departures. Today, we focus entirely on private, tailor-made journeys. While we occasionally connect solo travelers with others, it’s not always possible. Solo travel is available and we welcome it, though it can be more costly due to private arrangements. Each year, many independent travelers choose to explore Morocco with us, and we’re always happy to help create an unforgettable experience for those traveling on their own.
When is the best time to travel in Morocco?
The best time to travel in Morocco is whenever you get the chance! In reality, for the weather, the best times to visit the country are Spring (March – early June). Otherwise, September and October tend to be amazing (yet not as green) periods as well. The busiest times of year are during Easter week and the Christmas holidays (alongside the months of May and October). Other times to travel that aren’t as busy, yet still very worthwhile are the first two weeks of June and the month of November. For any of the higher periods, we recommend arranging your customized Morocco tour at least three to six months ahead of time. During parts of the year, it can be difficult to cater to more last-minute requests, although we’ll try. And, we get questions about Ramadan travel in Morocco too. You can feel free to read our Morocco Ramadan article for more information about this period of travel. While many may suggest avoiding traveling during Ramadan, we offer a different perspective. For those looking for cultural immersion, Ramadan is a wonderful opportunity!
What is the weather like in Morocco?
Morocco is a land of contrasts, often described as “the cold country with the hot sun.” The weather varies greatly depending on the season and region. Along the coast, temperatures range from 12°C (54°F) in winter to 25°C (77°F) in summer, while inland areas can be much hotter and the High and Middle Atlas mountains much colder. Though generally dry, northern regions may see rain, and the mountains often receive snow in winter and early spring. Marrakech is the country’s hottest city, with summer temperatures having reached as high as 54°C (129°F).
Should I purchase trip insurance for my Morocco trip?
For modern travel, having travel insurance for your customized Morocco tour is highly recommended. We suggest coverage for cancellation, trip interruption, and medical emergencies to protect you while on your journey. After booking your excursion with us, we’ll provide details of insurance providers that our past clients have trusted and recommended.
Where can I find a map of Morocco?
At Deep South Travel, we provide a variety of resources on our website to help you learn more about Morocco. You’ll find plenty of material to explore and enjoy. We’ve also created a custom map of Morocco that highlights the country’s top destinations, which we use in our itinerary packets and on our website as a reference when planning trips with travelers.
Where can I learn more about tourism in Morocco?
We’re glad you asked! We have an in-depth guide on tourism in Morocco that we think you’ll enjoy. It covers everything from major attractions like Marrakech and Fez to off-the-beaten-path destinations we recommend. Check it out to see if it answers your questions about traveling in Morocco.
Is Morocco a safe country to travel?
Morocco is a very safe country to visit and is considered one of the most stable in North Africa and the Middle East. We cover this and other safety topics in detail in our Morocco travel safety guide, which we believe you’ll find thorough. You can also find additional information for travelers from the U.S., Canada, Australia, and the U.K. on official government websites.
Do I need a visa to enter Morocco?
It depends on your nationality. Most foreign nationals do not need a visa to enter Morocco. If you hold a passport from the U.S., Canada, Australia/New Zealand, or Europe, you can travel visa-free, as can citizens of Malaysia, Singapore, and some Hong Kong passport holders. Travelers from other countries may require a visa. We provide a Morocco visa guide on our website, but we recommend checking with your local consulate for the most accurate information.
Do I need to tip in Morocco?
Tipping is a common practice in Morocco, as travel is a major part of the country’s economy. A 10% tip is typical for many services, including restaurant staff, and it’s customary to tip your driver if you’re satisfied with their service. When you book a customized Morocco tour with us, we provide a detailed tipping guide covering porters, maids, and other people you may encounter during your trip.
Should I exchange money before arriving in Morocco?
The Moroccan dirham is a closed currency, meaning it’s generally difficult to obtain outside the country. While some people do manage to get dirhams abroad, the exchange rates are usually much higher. The easiest way to access Moroccan currency is through ATMs, which are widely available throughout the country. We also have a detailed Morocco currency guide on our website for more information.
Where can I learn more about Morocco travel?
There are many resources available to learn more about traveling in Morocco. We recommend checking out our blog, as well as guidebooks written by our country director, including Moon Morocco and Marrakech and Beyond. Wikipedia and WikiTravel are also useful references. For must-see sights, UNESCO sites are always a highlight. It’s important to understand the difference between group tours and private, customized travel, as a personalized itinerary can be well worth the investment.
